Decay of Faith in The Enduring Chill Essay Example Decay of Faith in The Enduring Chill Essay Decay of Faith in The Enduring Chill Essay Khaqhovia Lee Ms. Bolle IB Junior English October 5, 2012 Decay of Faith Heaven, earth, and beliefs of a superior being ruling the world are contradicted through Flannery O’Connor’s stories. â€Å"The Enduring Chill†, a short story by Flannery O’Connor, displays religious figures combined with the hypocrisy of Christian faith. â€Å"The Enduring Chill† is about Asbury, a male writer, who returns home to live with his mother due to his illness. Great conflict occurs between Asbury and his mother, so much that he would rather die and leave her in despair than to live with her, suffering life in a cage. Flannery O’Connor applies the motif of religion to express the contradiction of a Christian believer. Flannery O’Connor portrays religion through the use of animals, symbolism to religious figures, and Christian stories throughout â€Å"The Enduring Chill†. Flannery O’Connor uses religious animals to reveal the contradiction nature of humans. When Asbury sees his sister, he tells his mother to, â€Å"let sleeping dogs lie† (O’Connor 358); the dogs could be related to Cerberus, the gate keeper to the underworld. Asbury sees his sister as evil. The quote also foreshadows Asbury’s illness, because he is lying in bed waiting for the illness to take his life, like the sleeping dogs. Flannery O’Connor also uses animals from different religions to foreshadow misfortunate events, such as â€Å"the dry cows were on one side and the milk herd on the other. She slowed the car and then stopped altogether, her attention caught by a cow with a bad quarter. † (O’Connor 362). The cow is a holy animal in the Hinduism religion, and the cow having a bad quarter is an omen of bad luck. It also foreshadows to the bad milk which is tainted with the stench of smoke, and causing Asbury to fall more ill. Another use of religious animals is â€Å"to find freedom, to liberate my imagination, to take it like a hawk from its cage and set it ‘whirling off into the widening gyre’ (Yeats) and what did I find? It was incapable of flight† (O’Connor 364). The quote reveals Asbury’s sense of freedom through the use of a hawk; hawks are known to be one of the most intelligent birds, as well as having a great vision. The hawk foreshadows Asbury’s realization, when Asbury discovers his illness wouldn’t kill him. Asbury is incapable of flying free from his caged life because he takes back the key to the drawers which held the letters, as soon as he discovers he would not die; caging himself in and stopping himself from gaining his freedom. A hawk also refers to a dove, which represents freedom and peace in the bible, and Asbury wants to live free and in peace. Animals are used to portray the progression of human life. Flannery O’Connor uses allusion to refer to bible stories, while using the stories to display the unfaithfulness of Christians. Asbury comes off the train and waits for his mother to come pick him up, and â€Å"Asbury felt that he was about to witness a majestic transformation, that the flat of roofs might at any moment turn into†¦some exotic temple of a god he didn’t know† (O’Connor 357). The majestic transformation alludes to Jesus on Mt. Sinai, where Jesus becomes engulfed in light, and radiates with the power of God. Asbury does not know the temple of God because he constantly turns away from God. The illusion he witnesses is common in the bible when God send’s a messenger and dreams to humans to warn and help them. Another example appears during the car ride to his mother’s home, and â€Å"the he turned and faced his mother grimly, irked that he had allowed himself, even for an instant, to see an imaginary temple in this collapsing country junction† (O’Connor 358). The temple of God is not a physical temple but the body of all the Christian believers, but Asbury does not understand God’s will. The collapsing country junction is an allusion to the destruction of the walls of Jericho. The walls fall from the undying faith of the Israelites. Asbury does not believe he sees the event and decides to continue in life waiting for his death to come without realizing God. The wall of Jericho symbolizes Asbury’s faith which is crumbling down. While Asbury lies in the hospital â€Å"a blinding red-gold sun moved serenely from under a purple cloud†¦ below it the treeline was black against the crimson sky† (O’Connor 382). The red-gold sun represents the death of Christ, as he is hanging on the cross. Jesus’s blood symbolizes the crimson sky. The black tree line forms the countless amounts of sinners which resent God and Jesus. The darkest days of the world are also on the day Christ dies; Asbury’s darkest days are also on the very same day he witnesses the scene. Each allusion displays the decaying faith of Christians and increase of human weakness. Flannery O’Connor displays the decaying faith of Christians by incorporating religious figures. Asbury describes his friend as being â€Å"as bland as the Buddha himself† (O’Connor 359). Buddha is usually seen as a cheerful and chubby man, who never falls into temptations, and not bland. Asbury’s knowledge of religion is very low by applying bland to Buddha. Buddha descends from a wealth family but he decides to follow the road of hardships, but Asbury is from a well off family but he decides to live the life of a metropolitan. Asbury fails in living the life and becomes overwhelmed with hardships; giving up the life he wished for and travels on a darker path. As Asbury wonders around his mother’s home he noticed the â€Å"water stains on the gray walls. Descending from the top molding, long icicle shapes had been etched by leaks and, directly over his bed on the ceiling, another leak had made a fierce bird with spread wings† (O’Connor 365). A fierce bird with spread wings symbolizes the Holy Spirit which appears to the disciples as they are enlightened by the Holy Spirit, with flames floating above their heads. Instead of flames there is a long icicle, the exact opposite of a flame. A fierce bird also symbolizes the anger of God because he would show no mercy to though who go against his will. Asbury disobeys his mother’s rules and falls into a deeper illness. Asbury stunned by the fact he wouldn’t die, looks into the mirror and â€Å"the eyes that stared back at him were the same that had returned his gaze every day from that mirror but seemed to him that they were paler† (O’Connor 382). God is all powerful and all seeing, the eyes represent his presence in the room, but he realizes the eyes are paler. Asbury loses God and stays living in his life trapped in a cage, with is mother. Religious figures portray the weakening of Christian Faith.

Both Detectives are partners in the TNT (Tactical Narcotics Team). They are assigned to a job where a Spaniard, Johnny Tapia (Jordi Molla) is smuggling drugs and a Russian (Peter Stormare) controls the distribution and owns almost every nightclub in town. Together they run the largest ecstasy import business in Miami. Burnettes sister, Syd (Gabrielle Union). is assigned to the same case as Lowrey and her brother. The police are having trouble finding evidence to convict Tapia resulting in Syd having to go undercover for five months, almost killing herself in a car chase, while Smith proves that he can drive and shoot at the same time and Lawrence checks to see how effective it is to shoot inside the vehicle rather than out. The climax of the movie is reached when there is a major shoot out in Cuba. Compared to the first Bad Boys movie this is a major disappointment to viewers who have waited 8 years for the sequel. Like all of Bays movies nothing is done in moderation, theres at least a million bullets fired in one scene alone! The motorway car chase is almost a replica of Matrix Reloaded and Terminator 3. Throw in some KKKs and dead bodies all over the motorway you have the total gross-out factor known to man. The movie is quite unpredictable but the anticipation Is lost because the plot has too many twists. : Smith gives a good performance and Lawrence isnt too bad, he gives a hilarious performance when he swallows a couple of Ecstasy pills. Molla and Stormare do a great job, the power hungry roles fit them like a glove. I think we will continue to see them acting in similar roles. The movies too long and too crude and probably not suitable for the certificate rating of 15. However the amount of comedy and action substitutes for this. I think that Columbia Pictures have only just made this is a successful movie. Dont hold your breath for another sequel. Reviewed by Shasta Nisar Commentary The document is a film review. We know this as the information such as details about characters and directors names are included in the first few lines. This factual data at the start of the document, gives the reader an indication that it is a film review. The personal views given also suggest this, for example, this is a major disappointment. Using personal comments means that a tone is created, as the author is sharing their views with the reader. Therefore a bond is formed as the author tries to persuade and inform the reader. Reviews are also read by people who have seen the film and want a professional view. The personal comments of the write may be shared by the reader or they may differ from those of the reader, either way the reader is engaged in the review. The text is aimed at people over 15, as this is what the certificate viewing is. It is also aimed at people who like comedy and action movies and would like to find out details about the movie before they watch, buy or rent it. The language suits the document as it is colloquial- major, and contains the views of the writer- Smith gives a good performance. On the surface the text is about the film Bad Boys II. However there are deeper meaning and attitudes. The authors opinion is expressed openly in this review for example- I think that Columbia Pictures have only just made this a successful movie. This may not be an opinion which is shared by other critics but the general tone set throughout the review is that the movie was not as good as the first one. This is done by using language such as too long and too crude. This coheres with a comment earlier in the review- nothing is done in moderation. The format of the review starts with general information about the movie such as the amount of time it runs for. The first paragraph is about the characters and who they are played by. The roles that are played by these actors are also included. The second paragraph contains the main parts of the plot. In this paragraph a informal tone is set by using the characters surname- Smith and Lawrence. It is also shot by selecting parts of the plot out which suggest the roles that each detective plays, for example- Smith proves that he can drive and shoot at the same time and Lawrence checks to see how effective it is to shoot inside the vehicle. This shows knowledge of the movie which is entertaining for the reader to read and not that factual or relevant to the reader. The third paragraph is the writers views and knowledge of the director Bay. The writer uses hyperbole- theres at least a million bullets fired in one scene alone! This exaggeration emphasises that there is a lot of shooting in that scene but also in other scenes too. The reader knows that this is an overstatement because of the use of the exclamation mark and also the quantity a million, one scene lasts approximately fifteen minutes, it is very difficult to fire, or create the illusion of, one million bullets. There is also comparison between a scene in Bad Boys II and similar scenes in other major films that had been released in 2003. This shows that the writer has knowledge on the industry and makes a good persuasion tool to influences the reader to agree with the writer. The last paragraph is the authors views on the actors performances. The writer uses a simile- fit them like a glove, this shows that the roles/characters suited the actors and were played extremely well and were very convincing. The purpose of a review is to inform the reader of a product and to express your own opinions. Ina review the writer must be careful not to give too much information about the plot away. I think that this review achieved its purpose and that the plot was not revealed as the write mentions that there are twists in the plot but does not expose them, this creates anticipation within the reader of what is to come, this is a mild encouragement for the reader to watch the movie and find out. The views express may deter potential viewers so the writer must be careful not to give very strong opinions as people may get offended.

Disclosure of material facts by proposer of insurance Essay A fact is considered to be material as per the provisions of Section 18(2) of the Marine Insurance Act 1906 if it would influence the judgment of a prudent insurer in fixing the premium, or determining whether he will take the risk. This rule applies is also applicable to non-marine insurance and despite the proposals of the Law Commission not being addressed to marine insurance, undoubtedly the decisions of the courts on disclosure of hull risks will have repercussions for householders. The degrees of influence are given below. The three degrees of influence. (A) Information type A is so material that the insurer, if he had known about it would have refused to enter the contract or in the alternative the insurer would have made further investigations resulting in refusal to do so. (B) Information type B consists of facts, which if the insurer had been aware of, would have resulted in the insurer’s making the contract of insurance but on quite different terms especially in respect of premium or conduction of a further investigations leading to insurance on a different set of terms altogether. The proposer has to reveal the material facts known to him whilst proposing insurance. However, in Berger Ltd. v. Pollock , non-disclosure of certain information, was held to be immaterial because the judge was far from satisfied that, if the undisclosed matters had been fully reported and explained to these underwriters, they would in fact have declined to accept this declaration under open cover or have sought to vary its terms or to require an increased rate of premium. (C) Information type C is that information, whose knowledge would have made the insurer consider it relevant but would not have resulted in the insurer’s refusal of the contract or insistence on different terms. It is information, which though affecting his judgment would have, in conjunction with other facts, had they been present, would have resulted in a different contract, but, which of its own accord, would not have affected the particular contract or its terms. This is the present position in England and is the consequence of the judgments of the Court of Appeal in CTI v. Oceanus . It has been suggested that this case propels English law in the direction suggested by the Law Commission. However, the Court of Appeal’s objective was to respect the Courts view of precedent. The reality is that the Court has succeeded in distancing the law from precedent, principle and the interests of the assured. This decision has met with almost universal concern and disappointment. CTI v. Oceanus CTI entered into an insurance contract successively with A, B and Oceanus. A and B being dissatisfied with the claims experience wanted a change in the terms of cover which were not acceptable to CTI . Hence, CTI insured with Oceanus on the basis of an account of their past claims record which, was not complete or entirely fair and accordingly Oceanus endeavoured to avoid the policy for misrepresentation and non-disclosure. Lloyd J. held that, even in the event of disclosure of all the relevant information the insurer would have made this contract on the same terms and that such information, which could be classified as belonging to type C, not being material, the contract could not be avoided. On appeal the Court held that the undisclosed information was to be classified as type B and not type C and therefore the decision at first instance had to be reversed resulting in the avoidance of the insurance. Nevertheless, the Court also stated obiter but after hearing argument, that there is no requirement that the particular insurer should have been induced to take the risk or charge a lower premium than he would otherwise have done as a result of the non-disclosure. The consequence of all this is that information of type C in English law is material and its concealment enables the insurer to avoid the contract of insurance, without any reservations in respect of commercial insurance and most likely in other lines too. It was hinted by Kerr L. J. that this rule might differ in respect of consumer insurance but the Law Commission has refused to countenance a special rule for consumers. Practicality. First, despite the absence of an absolute standard, the test of materiality is that of the prudent insurer, which is an objective test controlled and applied by the court on the basis of expert evidence. This is similar to that of a reasonable man in tort. In the parlance of insurance practice this test of a prudent insurer is no more a genuine inquiry into a particular person’s mind than it is in relation to the other reasonable or prudent persons who populate the rules of law to legitimise the dominant role of the judge. Secondly, despite the objective nature of the materiality test, it is not understandable as to why it is easier and therefore more pragmatic and definite to state that a fact has some influence or is of the type C, rather than to state that it has a decisive influence or that it can be classified as type A or type B. Thirdly, if the proposer has to perforce disclose information of the type C, then there is the further objection that probable assureds will be better off by exercising caution and not taking any risks by indulging in a total disclosure. The decision in CTI v. Oceanus does not take into cognizance the basic nature of misrepresentation and non-disclosure as connoting something that vitiates consent, in this case the consent of the insurer. It becomes to accept that the consent of the insurer was vitiated and that consequently the contract should be avoided, if the insurer would have made the same contract on the same terms, despite the lack of misrepresentation or disclosure.
